Mitt Romney Inspires Nostalgia For A Placid Icon Of Republican Moderation

Download PDF

Ah, yes, so many of us miss those halcyon years when a truly moderate Republican President occupied the White House. Yes, times were extravagantly difficult, economically, internationally; as 19th century poet Robert Browning wrote of his times, “how sad and bad and mad it was – but then, how it was sweet.”

Yet this previous Republican President remained levelheaded throughout these tribulations, so unlike the man who may in January 2013 occupy 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue should he manage to drive the country into a hard right turn thereby, in November, unseating President Obama.

Once again, recall this other former Republican President: a mind open, unsullied by revolutionary stirrings. A fellow with a modest tax plan;

a signer of legislation that reformed campaign finance;
an immigration reformer who supported a plan to legalize a millions of illegal immigrants;
a man devoted to expanding Medicare by adding prescription drug benefits for seniors;
a sympathetic heart who signed off on raising the minimum wage 24%;

this man, this man of moderation, even understood that human activity contributes to global warming. There is so much more as well about the calming centrism of this man – you can learn more at ThinkProgress.

Ah, George W. Bush, yesteryear’s man of moderation,

Will ye no come back again?
Will ye no come back again?
Better lo’ed ye canna be,
Will ye no come back again?

Lady Carolina Nairne (1766-1845), Jacobite

    It's not about missing the Bush years. I'm just looking forward to having anyone but Obama in the White House!
