State Referenda, Recalls, and Initiatives — Mixed Results, But GOP-Inspired Lunacy Repudiated in Ohio, Maine, Mississippi, and Arizona

Here’s why the referendum, initiative, and recall exist. Even when the votes go against one’s hopes or interests, they at least allow for a definitive democracy to occasionally be exercised and heard, loud and clear. It’s true, last night’s results in referenda and initiatives did not all go well (for example Mississippi approved a voter I.D. provision), nonetheless, many victories emerged for those of the populist and progressive crowd. Below is an image that sums up those big wins: in Ohio, Mississippi, Maine, and in Arizona (where voters recalled GOP Senate President Russell Pearce, the architect of Arizona’s draconian illegal immigrant law, replacing him with another, markedly saner, Republican). . . . .
