The Romney campaign has been under fire lately, friendly fire. Yesterday, WSJ’s Peggy Noonan, a reliably stern conservative, put a shot across the campaign’s bow. Today, she put one into its mast:

“[Yesterday] I called [the Romney/Ryan campaign] incompetent, but only because I was being polite. I really meant ‘rolling calamity.'”

So, earlier today, the Frigate Romney was sailing unprotected, with more and more ships of the line converging on it with the wind at their backs. And worst of all, these were ships of his own fleet; more friendly fire on the way!

Emergency! Time for a smokescreen. A big one. Maybe then, Frigate Romney can slip away into the night and live to fight another day. “Smoke screen deployed! Put it at our backs and lay low!”
