Gingrich Comes In Fourth In Illinois GOP Primary, Declares Victory As Thousands Flee The State

Last night, Newt Gingrich grabbed 73,362 votes in the Illinois GOP primary finishing well ahead of “Other” who received 9,181. Mr. Gingrich immediately declared victory.

“This is clearly a transfor-mative election in this pres-idential cycle, and it’s certainly obvious that Other, if he or she is to stay in the race, will have a very steep hill to climb, at least as formidable as the Japanese army faced on the beaches of Gallopoli [sic] in 1915.”

When reminded that, despite his thumping of Other, he had garnered only eight percent of the total vote, trailing Romney, Santorunm, and Paul by more than 750,000, the Speaker maintained that only 99% of the votes had been tabulated.

“I believe that if you do the math, I’m clearly in the best position to prevail after the final one percent has been counted. As a historian I can only remind you that Truman was counted out in 1949 yet prevailed against Adlai Stevenson once all the votes were in. I don’t expect the elite media to be familiar with that fact, of course.”

He continued confidently:

“We will, of course, now move on to Louisiana where we clearly expect to achieve as big a victory this Saturday, just as we did in Alabama and Mississippi a week ago.”

When reminded that he did not, in fact, win those primaries, he responded:

“Well, clearly there are many ways to count votes. And I will no longer discuss it. You in the northeastern media consistently attempt to move me off my central message by distracting voters with minutiae. Frankly, you are unable to understand the transformative candidate I am. So, in your ignorance you rely on worn out assumptions about what number of votes constitutes a winning percentage. You need to study astrophysics as I have.”

On another front, thousands of Illinois residents are still fleeing the state after learning that Mr. Gingrich had won more than 70,000 GOP primary votes. This reaction is similar to the reaction in Massachusetts two weeks ago after Mr. Gingrich received 5% of the GOP vote on Super Tuesday, as we reported here and here. Problems in Massachusetts still continue. Consequently, Illinois Democratic Governor Pat Quinn takes this mass exodus from his state seriously, and quickly closed the borders. Moreover, surrounding states do not have the budget flexibility to assist the thousands of refugees entering their states.

We will keep you informed as this crisis develops.
