MARCELLUS
Shall I strike at it with my partisan?
HORATIO
Do, if it will not stand
Marcellus: We do it wrong, being so majestical,
To offer it the show of violence;
For it is, as the air, invulnerable,
And our vain blows malicious mockery.
Wm. Shakespeare, Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 1
Partisan (military) – As a name for paramilitary forces engaged behind the front line
This partisan represents the transition from the Gothic lange de bouef and is considered late Gothic in period and form. The iron head has the straight edges of its predecessors with rudimentary base lugs which were used for cutting the reins of an opponent’s horse. That duel function distinguishes it from earlier forms as a multi use weapon.
Length overall: 89 1/4”
partisan is also a type of pike, notably from Italy, characterised by a crossbar or flare towards the base of the head. Most likey named for it posessor, a partisano or supporter, as in either they (pikemen) were in a supporting role on the battlefield, or maybe as a supporter of the Pope. The French being most literate before the 18th cent. probably picked the term up and it spread from there.
