On the Road in the Old Confederacy. Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello.
My wife Sue and I are on the road this week. Off to the some of the northern portions of the old Confederacy, and the semi-confederacy, like Kentucky and Missouri. We began by driving from our home in Silver Spring, Maryland to Charlottesville, Virginia, home of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello.
Here’s a good place to go for an overview. (Click on the preceding hyperlink, not the picture below.)
Our schedule doesn’t permit me to write much, so you’ll be spared my usual “on and on and on and on” . . . On the subject of Jefferson’s relationship to slavery, I will observe that in the introductory movie and throughout the site, the term “enslaved persons” is used . . . and that seems to me to truly represent their status. I did not expect that forthright a term to be used in Monticello . . .
Here’s some of my photos:

Then, on to Charleston, West Virginia, and Louisville, Kentucky . . . More pics tomorrow!
