On Day when Trump Thumps Paris Climate Accord Delaware Senator Tom Carper Tweets To Remind Him Of His Former Call To Fight Against Climate Destruction
Michael J. Matheron, June 2, 2017
Yesterday, President Trump formally withdrew United States participation in the Paris Climate Accord:
“And I don’t want anything to get in our way. I am fighting every day for the great people of this country. Therefore, in order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America and its citizens, the United States will withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord — (applause) — thank you, thank you — but begin negotiations to reenter either the Paris Accord or a really entirely new transaction on terms that are fair to the United States, its businesses, its workers, its people, its taxpayers. So we’re getting out. But we will start to negotiate, and we will see if we can make a deal that’s fair. And if we can, that’s great. And if we can’t, that’s fine.
. . .
Thus, as of today, the United States will cease all implementation of the non-binding Paris Accord and the draconian financial and economic burdens the agreement imposes on our country. This includes ending the implementation of the nationally determined contribution and, very importantly, the Green Climate Fund [GCF] which is costing the United States a vast fortune.” [full text]
[ED. Note: Since its founding in September 2010, the U.S. pledged three billion dollars and has paid one billion into the Green Climate Fund [GCF]. This is during a time when our GDP averaged approximately twelve trillion dollars per year. The amount pledged and disbursed is not ” vast fortune” by anyone but Trump administration standards given our one hundred trillion GDP from 2010 to date] In fact, one billion is de minimus amount equivalent to a rounding error]
Delaware Senator Tom Harper, a three-decades long political veteran of the U.S. House, the Delaware Governorship, and a 16 year member of the U.S. Senate where he is the ranking member pf the Senate Committee on the Environment, emerged recently as a staunch dissenter to President Trump’s military strength attack on the earth itself, particularly yesterday’s Paris Climate Accord withdrawal. Carper is viewed as a late arrival to the climate change fight, as the IndyStar reported in early March 2017:
The lawmaker leading the charge against President Trump’s relentless efforts to roll back environmental regulations is a soft-spoken, small-state senator who’s collected hundreds of thousands in campaign contributions from the chemical industry and whose vote for the Keystone XL Pipeline sparked left-wing outrage.
. . .
But some of those concerns were allayed last month with Carper’s steadfast and impassioned opposition to Scott Pruitt, Trump’s choice to run the Environmental Protection Agency.
Well, yesterday, on the heels of the President’s announcement, Senator Carper tweeted this bombshell:
