3rd Debate Fallout: With President’s Blessing, Mitt Romney Hired By National Security Council As Unpaid Intern For Remainder Of Campaign

Few viewers failed to notice that during the third Presidential debate Mitt Romney accepted heart and soul President Obama’s policies and opinions on nearly everything foreign, from Persian rugs to sanctions on Iran. So agreeable was the GOP candidate that  he substantially backed off the very contrary positions he trumpeted throughout the campaign. Well, time’s have changed.

Immediately following his drubbing on Monday’s foreign policy debate, Governor Romney applied for an elite week-long National Security Council internship. With the President’s approval, he was selected immediately. Early Tuesday morning, the GOP Presidential candidate attended a meet and greet with the NSC bigwigs in the White House Situation Room (see photo below, courtesy Reuters).

This is an unusual step for a Presidential candidate to take. How unusual? According to the NSC historian (whose name is classified), it

“has never occurred in the nearly 70 years of the Council’sexistence. Until Mr. Romney’s candidacy no one believed it likely or necessary. Romney’s a game changer.  We do not even know where to begin his internship. We have only one week, mind you, and the world is a big place.”

Indeed. And a dangerous one. Managing that is NSC’s only purpose and vital to any President. The NSC, as described by the White House,

“is the President’s principal forum for considering national security and foreign policy matters with his senior national security advisers and cabinet officials.”

According to Romney/Ryan campaign insiders, the Governor felt that since he was indeed going to win the election he “ought have a moderate understanding of foreign lands and how to treat them.” Romney believes that President Obama has done a fine job, and he is worthy of emulation. Indeed, one highly placed source revealed,

“Even prior to the third debate the Governor had been hearing rumors that his national security team was infested with Bush administration losers who had never been correct about anything. The Governor himself called one of his top national security guys, Dan Senor, about the gossip, and Mr. Senor confirmed them, but pointed out it was too late to do anything about it. He advised putting off any reshuffling until the second term.”

In any event, with President Obama doing the introductions, candidate Romney met briefly this morning with the NSC bigwigs (see picture above, courtesy Reuters). During the meet and greet, he told the surprised gathering that he hopes to bring his “foreign policy engine up to idle, at least,” and he  looks forward to this Friday, 8:00 am sharp, his first day as “Mitt Romney, NSC Intern.”
