GOHMERT: Over in the Middle East, we talk to allies and they wonder which one of us are going to be the next ones that you Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert, genius at workthrow under the bus. When it comes to the shutdown that’s going on, I heard just before I came on, some senator from Arizona — a guy that liked Gadhafi before he wanted to bomb him, a guy that liked Mubarak before he wanted him out, a guy that’s been to Syria and supported al Qaeda and the rebels — but he was saying today the shutdown has been a fool’s errand, and I agree with him. The president and Harry Reid should not have shut this government down.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (TX) at last Friday’s Values Voter Summit

Last night, on NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams broached the topic showing that he’d been itching to do so no matter what. Like the crazy Warner Bros. cartoons that once proceeded movies, no one doesn’t enjoy Louie Gohmert crazy. Hence, in a circuitous way Williams tied Gohmert’s comment to first, the government shutdown, then to political compromise, and with a short jump to decorum, Ta dah! Well played, Mr. Williams, well played.

BRIAN WILLIAMS:  Is this the way we do business now in Washington?  Is consensus dead, is compromise dead?  And how about decorum?  You have very nicely passed it off, but recently Congressman Gohmert of Texas called you an Al-Qaeda supporter and it hardly made a blimp in all the talk.

JOHN McCAIN:  Well, on that particular issue sometimes those are — comments like that are made out of malice, but if someone has no intelligence, I don’t view it as being a malicious statement.

McCain, the gray eminence of warhawks, replied with what should become the standard comment whenever Louie Gohmert says anything. McCain, much and harshly criticized here for reflexively ginning up nearly every Middle East incident as an American casus belli, he often surprises on the upside. He helped a bipartisan deficit ceiling-shutdown deal emerge from the Senate, and yesterday, he upbraided those who asked the impossible: defunding/delaying/crushing the Affordable care Act. Implying to the point of all-but-naming “Texas Ted” Cruz and Utah’s Mike Lee his discouraged and disappointed soliloquy brought out his best instincts. If but if he were bringing that to matters of war and peace. . . [see video here (because it’s HuffPo, a 10 sec. advert precedes]
