A Union of States

My postings will be somewhat less regular for a few months, as I am temporarily pursuing other opportunities, but I will keep up as best I can. This summer calls for slowing down and simplifying, concentrating passion towards its best use. I have been working on developing my photography skills beyond the rudimentary, complementing my continuing interest in all things historical.

On my recent road trip, we spent the night and morning in Lexington, Virginia (NOT Kentucky), home of the storied Virginia Military Institute, Washington and Lee, and also the cemetery wherein Stonewall Jackson is buried. Many other Confederate soldiers are buried there, as well, and their stories speak of a time when the “United” of these United States of America was imperiled. We are unique as a country in our tremendous diversity of race, culture, heritage, religion, ancestry, beliefs and modes of thinking. We did survive the test presented in the Civil War (Between the States), barely perhaps, but we did survive. We are now proudly, angrily, lovingly, furiously, passionately, passively, indifferently, American, of the United States. We are also citizens of states, counties and townships, but we are together of one nation.
